Purpose [ Back to top ]

Founded by Bill McCartney in 1990, Promise Keepers ("PK") is a Christ-centered ministry dedicated to helping men become godly influences in their world by uniting them in vital relationships. The primary means for accomplishing these goals are as follows:
    (1) Conferences and other catalytic events designed to draw men closer to God and to challenge them to make life-changing commitments to their families, churches and communities. The Field Ministries team works with churches before, during and after conferences to maximize the local effectiveness of these events through programs, training and assistance throughout the cycle.
    (2) Productions and publications bring the message to their constituents, to churches, and to the public at large through various media including radio broadcasts, videotapes, audio tapes, newspapers, books, magazines and the Internet.

    PK sponsors the following:
    (1) Two-day stadium conferences around the nation enable thousands of men from around the nation and world to join together for worship, prayer, and teaching.
    (2) Serve the City project is a "hands-on" ministry of PK to the inner city. Through community service tasks such as Bible distribution, church repairs, park beautification, and serving assistance in soup kitchens, PK men work to influence their communities, build racial and denominational unity, and pursue vital relationships.
    (3) PK also develops and provides numerous resources for personal study and men's groups. These resources include audio/video recordings, radio programs, books, study guides, worship tapes, and PK newsletters.

This organization is a nonprofit. Contributions to it are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. It is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

Promise Keepers presents a catalytic program designed to point men in the direction of a vibrant and practical Christian faith and lifestyle through the local church. Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]

Promise Keepers uses the following to communicate its faith:

1.We believe that there is one God eternally existing in three persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
    2. We believe that the Bible is God's written revelation to man and that it is verbally inspired, authoritative, and without error in the original manuscripts.
    3. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, death on the cross to provide for our redemption, bodily resurrection and ascension into heaven, present ministry of intercession for us, and His return to earth in power and glory.
    4. We believe in the personality and deity of the Holy Spirit, that He performs the miracle of new birth in unbelievers and indwells believers, enabling them to live godly lives.
    5. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin, was alienated from God. Only through faith, trusting in Christ alone for salvation that was made possible by His death and resurrection, can that alienation be removed.

History [ Back to top ]

On March 20, 1990, Bill McCartney (then, University of Colorado head football coach) and his friend Dave Wardell, Ph.D., were on a three-hour car ride to a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, and they discussed the idea of filling a stadium with Christian men. Later that year, 72 men began to pray and fast about the concept of thousands of men coming together for the purpose of Christian discipleship. During July 1991, 4,200 men gathered for the first Promise Keepers conference at the University of Colorado basketball arena.

On Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, PK convened a massive gathering in Washington, D.C., on the National Mall. Hundreds of thousands of men participated in Stand in the Gap: A Sacred Assembly of Men, a day of personal repentance and prayer. Since then 1,600 churches have called sacred assemblies in time of spiritual crisis. Twelve instances are recorded in the Old Testament when the nation of Israel was called to gather for days of fasting, prayer, confession, and repentance of sin because the nation had wandered away spiritually and morally. Stand in the Gap was patterned after such sacred assemblies.

Seventy-two men participated in the first PK gathering, in 1990, in Boulder, Colo. Since then, more than 3.2 million men have attended PK stadium and arena events:

    • 1991: 4,200 University of Colorado, Coors Events Center
    • 1992: 22,000 University of Colorado, Folsom Field
    • 1993: 50,000 Folsom Field filled to capacity
    • 1994: 278,600 Seven stadiums nationwide
    • 1995: 727,342 Thirteen stadiums nationwide
    • 1996: 1.1 million Twenty two stadiums nationwide
    • 1997: 638,297 Nineteen conferences nationwide
    • 1998: 453,000 Nineteen conferences nationwide

Ministry Needs [ Back to top ]

PK express its needs as follows:

Volunteers: Volunteering is close to the heart of God. It represents the selfless, caring, giving qualities to which Christians are called. It suggests a sense of family where a growing relationship with Christ leads to the overflow of love from which we live our lives to positively influence others with the Love of God. The work can be hard and the hours are long. Many labor in obscurity, making sacrifices that only the Lord can know, but “Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. (Matt. 5:5 NKJV).” The foremost need for volunteer assistance is at each conference.

Ministry Statement or Response [ Back to top ]

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. It is not negative if there is no official statement as many don’t have anything to add than what is already on the profile. This section is not tied to transparency or to communication in general. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
