Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]
Probe uses the following to express its Statement of Faith:
The final authority of our beliefs is the Bible, God's infallible written Word, the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that the Bible was uniquely, verbally, and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that it was without error in the original manuscripts. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters on which it speaks (2 Tim 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:21; 1 Cor 2:13, 10:11; John 10:35).
We explicitly affirm our belief in these basic Bible teachings:
- There is one true God, eternally existing in three persons-- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--each of whom possesses equally all the attributes of Deity and the characteristics of personality (Matt 28:19; John 10:30; Acts 5:3,4; 2 Cor 13:14).
- God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth, is the functional head of the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). He sent the Son to obtain satisfaction for divine justice and to proclaim reconciliation. The Spirit He sent to teach truth. He is spoken of as the Father of all creation, of angels, of Israel, of believers, and of Christ (John 14-17, 20:17; Job 1:16; Psalm 103:13).
- Jesus is God, the living Word, who became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. Hence, He is perfect Deity and true humanity united in one person forever. He lived a sinless life, and voluntarily atoned for the sins of men by dying on the cross as their substitute, thus satisfying divine justice and accomplishing salvation for all who trust in Him alone. He rose from the dead in the same body, though glorified, in which He lived and died. He ascended bodily into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, and there He, the only mediator between God and man, continually makes intercession for His own (Matt 1:16,20,23; Luke 1:34; Heb 4:15; 2 Cor 5:21; 1 Cor 15; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Peter 2:5-9; 1 John 2:1).
- The Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity, has come into the world to reveal and glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to men. He convicts and draws sinners to Christ, imparts new life to them, continually indwells them from the moment of spiritual birth, baptizes them into the body of Christ, and seals them until the day of Redemption (John 16:8-11; Titus 3:5; 1 Cor 6:19; Rom 8:9b; 1 Cor 12:13; Eph 5:18; Gal 5:22-23).
- Man was originally created in the image of God. He sinned by disobeying God; thus, he was alienated from his Creator. The historic fall brought all mankind under divine condemnation. Man's nature is corrupted, and he is thus totally unable to please God. Every man is in need of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit (Gen 1:26-27; Eph 2:1; Rom 1:18, 3:20, 7:21-25, 5:12).
- The salvation of man is wholly a work of God's free grace, and is not the result, in whole or in part, of human works or goodness or religious ceremony. God imputes His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, and thereby justifies them in His sight (Rom 6:23; Eph 2:8,9; John 3:16; Titus 3:5-8).
It is the privilege of all who are born again of the Spirit to be assured of their salvation from the very moment in which they trust Christ as their Savior. This assurance is not based upon any kind of human merit, but is produced by the witness of the Holy Spirit, who confirms in the believer the testimony of God in His written Word. The Holy Spirit's fullness, power, and guidance are appropriated in the believer's life by faith (Rom 5:9-10, 8:1, 29- 30, 38-39; John 5:24, 10:27-30, 14:16; 1 Tim 1:12; Phil 1:6; Heb 7:25; Jude 24).
Every believer is called to live so in the power of the indwelling Spirit that he will not fulfill the lust of the flesh, but will bear fruit to the glory of God. The Scriptures set out the principles and rules of the Christian life (Rom 12:1,2; Gal 5:16- 26; 2 Cor 6:14).
- Jesus Christ is the head of the Church, His Body, which is composed of all men, living and dead, who have been joined to Him through saving faith. God admonishes His people to assemble together regularly for worship, for participation in ordinances, for edification through the Scriptures, and for mutual encouragement (1 Cor 12:12-13; Col 1:18; Eph 2:15-16).
- At physical death, the believer enters immediately into eternal, conscious fellowship with the Lord and awaits the resurrection of the body to everlasting glory and blessing (1 Cor 15:12ff; 2 Cor 5:1-10; Phil 1:23; John 12:26).
At physical death, the unbeliever enters immediately into eternal, conscious separation from the Lord and awaits the resurrection of the body to everlasting judgment and condemnation (Eph 2:12; Rom 3:23, 5:12; Matt 25:31-46; Rev 20:11-15).
Jesus Christ will come again to the earth--personally, visibly, and bodily--to consummate history and fulfill the plan of God (Rev 19:11-16; Zech 14:4-11; 1 Thess 1:9-10).
- The Lord Jesus Christ commanded all believers to proclaim the gospel throughout the world and to disciple men of every nation. The fulfillment of that Great Commission requires that all worldly and personal ambitions be subordinated to a total commitment to "Him who loved us and gave Himself for us" (Matt 28:19; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47-48).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We accept those large areas of doctrinal teaching on which, historically, there has been general agreement among all true Christians. Because of the specialized calling of our ministry, we desire to allow for freedom of conviction on other doctrinal matters, provided that any interpretation is based upon the Bible alone, and that no such interpretation shall become an issue which hinders the ministry to which God has called us, or our fellowship together.
Probe Ministries was founded in 1973 by James F. Williams Jr. and Jon Buell, who sought to form a ministry that would bridge the frontier between the agonizing questions man asks and the profound answers the Gospel offers. Beginning with the vision and no staff, Probe has grown today to form a working unit of 11 scholars and 4 support staff. As the organization has served Christ faithfully for 35 years, Probe now stands ready to dramatically expand its ministry for Christ the next 35 years.
This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with specific needs to be posted on the profile. At such a time that MinistryWatch.com receives a response from the ministry, it will be posted immediately.

2009 MinistryWatch.com Shining Light top ministry list2008 MinistryWatch.com Shining Light top ministry list2006 MinistryWatch.com Shining Light top ministry list
Probe listed by MinistryWatch.com as a 2008 Shining Light ‘Top 30’ Exemplary Ministry.
MinistryWatch.com desires to see overall giving to Biblical Christian values increase and as such we developed this format to highlight those ministries which are exemplary.
This ministry is one of the “best ministries” and outstanding examples when we consider Philippians 4:8 and weigh and take account of those ministries that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Identifying a diversity of the best ministries is challenging given the selfless work that so many do for the cause of Christ. No one is able to give to every ministry that one values as we are not possessed of unlimited resources. It is best to make an assessment of our options and make discerning decisions. MinistryWatch.com’s assessment looked at the following seven areas when considering those to make the list:
- Transparency
- Truth Claims
- Values/ Worldview
- Sectors/Functions
- Resourcefulness
- Red Flag Issues
- Consultation
A fuller explanation of our evaluation criteria is on the front page of MinistryWatch.com. A foundational premise was to shine a figurative light on those ministries that were "Christian" more than in name only. Ministries were chosen that were not just marketing to Christians as a market segment for "Christian donor money", but ministries that had theological underpinnings and Biblical values that determined their actions. Organizations that relied more on a secular motivation and means were excluded as well as those “ministries” that seem to view the organization as their own vehicle as a business to make money rather than a love to maximize ministry to others and to let their light shine for the glory of God.
Inclusion on this Shining Light list does not mean this ministry or other listed ministries are perfect. No ministry is perfect and any that look long and hard enough may find areas for improvement; as no doubt most legitimate ministries are aware of areas to improve and have their own to-do list. Only you can decide for yourself with confidence if a ministry shares your values and with your giving plan. As far as MinistryWatch.com’s assessment, given the criteria that we followed, this ministry rose to the top.
This is just another step in our mission of encouraging Christians to give more of their talents and resources to Kingdom-building efforts. In short, we wish to help spread the Gospel of Christ by helping Christians give more and more effectively to the works of the Lord. If the Lord uses our list as part of that process, we will have been a blessing to both those ministries who have been ‘good and faithful servants’ with the Lord’s resources and to Christian donors who are seeking to be good stewards of their giving.

MinistryWatch.com’s Take
June 2005
By J. Andrew Preslar
The Making of a Christian Mind
In case you haven’t been paying attention, there is a cultural war going on in our midst. Ideas are the weapons of choice in this war. The armies are the purveyors of those ideas: journalists, artists, scholars, etc. If you happen to be a Christian in these troubled times, you might feel a little overwhelmed by it all, afraid that your side is hopelessly outnumbered and that your children could be among the spiritual casualties. You may even be considering a retreat into a hermetically-sealed, anti-cultural shell or otherwise giving up the fight. But before you do, there are a few things to consider: (1) Jesus called his followers to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16). Your light cannot shine very well before men if you keep it hidden in a cave. (2) For people of faith, numerical odds should not be particularly daunting. Remember Gideon? (3) In a war of ideas, there is one resource that we must not fail to tap into and utilize; namely,
Christian ideas. The Church has always faced intellectual opposition, and God has always supplied her with great defenders of the faith to counter the various worldly philosophies. Names such as Justin Martyr, Augustine, Anselm, Thomas Aquinas, Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, B.B. Warfield, and (more recently) Francis Schaeffer, Norman Geisler, William Lane Craig and Alvin Plantinga are (or should be) familiar ones in the history of Apologetics (the science and art of defending the Christian faith). These thinkers come from different cultural and theological backgrounds, but they stand united in their insistence upon the truth of the Christian faith. That faith is entirely relevant to the issues of today, but if few Christians understand or are able to help others see its relevance, the cultural war will continue to be a rather one-sided affair.
The making of a Christian mind does not occur by osmosis.
Probe Ministries International (PMI) is an evangelical Christian ministry dedicated to helping believers “probe” into the intellectual and cultural milieu of our times, to understand the issues being debated, and to think “Christianly” about, well, everything. PMI follows in the tradition of Francis Schaeffer, who maintained that every aspect of life must be brought into subjection to the Lordship of Christ. One of the great assets of PMI is the number of quality teachers among its staff who are able to intelligently speak and write about a wide variety of contemporary issues. PMI helps believers to think about fundamental matters such as the nature of truth, the scope of theology, first principles of logic, and scientific methodology. The ministry also deals with issues such as Christian stewardship and the environment, the arts, marriage and the family, and American government. Although committed to the principle of measuring truth claims by the criteria of reason and evidence, PMI recognizes that the Word of God is the ultimate authority in all matters. Human reason cannot be discounted, but it must be submitted to the authority of Scripture. PMI’s training ministry is designed for high school and college students as well as adults.
PMI’s approach to apologetics is characterized by balanced presentation and reasoned argumentation. Because PMI exists to equip believers to think, its teachers refrain from dogmatic assertions and manipulative tactics. The fundamentals of the faith are insisted upon, but they are also argued for, and systematically exposited so as to manifest the coherence of orthodoxy. PMI values careful argumentation over bald assertion. Different viewpoints on a single issue are not ignored, but are explained, and the strengths and weaknesses of each view are carefully analyzed. An example of this approach to building the Christian mind is PMI’s presentation of the various theories of origins. The claims of the evolutionists, as well as the putative evidence for those claims, are presented and analyzed.
PMI points out several weaknesses in the basic evolutionary scheme, and proposes biblical theism, with its doctrine of special creation, as an alternative view. The evidence for theism (i.e., the worldview which maintains that a personal, transcendent God is the ultimate cause of all things) is presented, and objections to theism are considered and answered. PMI then presents the major positions on origins within the theistic camp: the recent creation (or “young earth”) view, the progressive creation (or “day age”) view, and the theory of theistic evolution. Each of these positions is critiqued in light of empirical data and the biblical text. Another strength of PMI is the fact that its teaching staff is conversant with the viewpoints of the secular intellectual community. Thus they are able to help Christians recognize and respond to the “spirit of the world” in its various guises and permutations.
Mind Games and Movie Nights
PMI’s feature ministry program is the Mind Games Conferences. A Mind Games Conference is a two day (Friday/Saturday) event featuring the speaking ministry of PMI’s teaching staff. Each member of PMI’s teaching and research team holds at least one graduate degree in theology and/ or an apologetics-related field. The purpose of these conferences is to “give Christians the basic tools they need to start building a Christian world view.” This includes equipping them to “defend their beliefs with intellectual integrity, clarity, patience, and compassion.” Topics include “The Authority of the Bible,” “Christian View of Science and Earth History,” “The Deity of Christ,” and “World Views.” Specialized teaching tracks can be requested. Examples of these are: “Christian Perspective on Homosexuality,” “The Christian and the Arts,” and “Political Correctness on Campus.” Mind games conferences are designed for young people (16 and up) and adults. A Conference can be scheduled by contacting PMI.
Media Ministries
PMI produces a daily, three-minute radio broadcast program which can be heard on more than 400 stations. These programs contain short but weighty discussions of a variety of topics, including apologetics, Church history, theology, politics, and books of the Bible. The ministry’s website features hundreds of articles written by PMI staff, as well as dozens of personalized responses to questions asked by visitors to the site (via an email forum). Not all of these questions are typical, and almost none of them are susceptible to easy answers. Here are a few examples: “Is naval piercing OK?” “Is there a demonic spirit of homosexuality?” “Did the Jesus stories arise from pagan myths?” “If the Trinity doctrine is correct, then why isn’t it in the Bible?” and “The Bible is full of errors, so why do you trust it?” PMI’s answers, though brief, are usually biblical, responsible, and thoughtful.
