Purpose [ Back to top ]

February of 1966 in Syracuse, a group of Christians met to begin a Christian radio station in Central New York. They formed Mars Hill Broadcasting Co., Inc. (MHBC); the name "Mars Hill" was chosen because it is the name of the public forum near Athens where the apostle Paul preached to the Stoics and the Epicureans.

MHBC describes their purpose as follows: “The purpose for which the Mars Hill Broadcasting Co., Inc. was formed is as follows:
a) To communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ, whether by radio broadcasting, television, satellite, religious programming, including the use of films already available and/or producing films, tape recording and distribution, printing, literature distribution, Bible study courses, and any communication media whether presently available or subsequently available because of future inventions. b) To disseminate information through all lawful means which will promote the doctrines of the Holy Scriptures.
c) To promote and encourage personal dedication and consecration of time and talents for Christian service.
d) To assist and support missionaries and others engaged in Christian service in this country and in any part of the world, or assist in the training of persons expecting to become involved in such work in this country and in any part of the world.
e) To develop and conduct Bible conferences, Bible study groups, evangelistic meetings, prayer meetings and all kinds of meetings, including concerts and other public gatherings, by which people of various walks of life may be helped to live a better life following Christian principles.
f) To assist and cooperate with individuals, groups, churches, conferences, schools and all other organizations dedicated to like purposes and devoted to teaching, preaching or broadcasting the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ; and to do any and all things which will lawfully promote the purposes herein expressed.” MHBC declares Jesus Christ to be the Savior of the world, having paid the penalty for the sins of all mankind. With such provision for forgiveness of sin, the call goes out to "whosoever will" to accept Christ's gift of salvation through the new birth. Personal spiritual growth is taught, through broadcasters who help listeners understand and apply God's Word, the Bible. The ministry reaches out in love to strengthen the Christian family with a 24-hour-a-day broadcast alternative. The Mars Hill Network seeks reinforce the ministries of local churches where the Word of God is declared. Mars Hill employees serve to fulfill this vision as a team.

This organization is a nonprofit. Contributions to it are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. It is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]

MHBC uses the following to express its statement of faith:

There is one God. Infinitely perfect. He is a triune God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Jesus Christ, the Son, is true God, and true man. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died, was buried, rose again the third day, and is seated at the right hand of God, making intercession for believers. He, the Just, died on the Cross of the unjust as a substitutionary sacrifice for all who believe in Him and are thereby justified by His shed Blood.

The Holy Spirit is a representative of the Trinity in the world today. His work is to convict men of their sin, bringing them to repentance; and to seal, indwell and comfort the believer. In all that He does, He testifies of and glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ and not Himself.

The Old & New Testaments, as originally written, are without error. Being divinely inspired by God, they are a complete revelation of His will for the salvation of man. They constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice.

Man was originally created in the image of God, but fell through disobedience. All men are born with a sinful nature, are separated from God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of Jesus Christ.

Salvation has been made available through Jesus Christ for all men. Those who repent and believe in Him, by God's grace, are born again of the Spirit of God and become the children of God.

It is the will of God that each believer be filled with the Holy Spirit; be separated from sin and the world; and be fully dedicated to the will of God. He thereby receives power for holy living and effective service.

The true Church of Christ is constituted by those who are redeemed by Christ's finished work and born again by the Holy Spirit.

There shall be a bodily resurrection of both the just and the unjust: the just into everlasting joy with Christ and the unjust into everlasting conscious torment.

The second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ is certain and will be personal and visible. This is the believers' blessed hope and trust, and an incentive for holy living and faithful service. "

History [ Back to top ]

February of 1966 in Syracuse, a group of Christians met to begin a Christian radio station in Central New York. They formed, Mars Hill Broadcasting Co., Inc. (MHBC), a stock corporation. The name "Mars Hill" was chosen because it is the name of the public forum near Athens where the apostle Paul preached to the Stoics and the Epicureans.

Initially, MHBC was financed through the sale of $60,000 of stock and a bond issue. After seven years of ownership by the stock corporation, operating WMHR-FM under a commercial license, the Board of Directors moved to convert to a not-for-profit corporation operating under the laws of New York State. Now, contributions to MHBC are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

In July 1967 construction began, and on Sunday, March 9, 1969, WMHR-FM went on the air at 102.9 MHz. MHBC has grown into a three-station radio network that delivers programs to its stations and affiliates. On February 29, 1988, WMHN-FM 89.3 MHz went on the air in Webster, New York. And on October 1, 1990, WMHI-FM 94.7 MHz went on the air serving Jefferson County in northern New York and eastern Ontario, Canada. On December 20, 1991, the FCC approved non-commercial licenses for all three stations.
