Literacy & Evangelism International (LEI) seeks to free those around the world who are in bondage to illiteracy in their native language. Because illiteracy prevents people from reading God’s written Word and therefore from knowing the truth of God’s Living Word, Jesus Christ, all of LEI’s teaching materials (primers) have Bible content. In many areas of the world, an ability to communicate in English is necessary, so LEI offers Bible-content English as a Second Language (ESL) training and materials also. LEI is a missionary fellowship, Christians from various nations and denominations, drawn together by a passion for God and compassion for people who cannot yet read the Word of God. LEI desires to see the Church in every nation effectively reaching the illiterate, bringing them to the Living Word, Jesus Christ, through enabling them to read God’s written Word, the Bible. LEI assists Christian groups worldwide by helping them create primers and new reader materials in any language. As of the end of 2004, primers in more than 160 languages have been produced.
Primers which can be ordered from LEI’s Tulsa headquarters include:
(1) Firm Foundations, a set of three books plus three workbooks, for teaching basic English literacy to English speakers.
(2) Passport to the World of English, a set of four books for teaching English as a second language (ESL) to persons whose native language is anything other than English.
(3) Nuevos Caminos, a set of two books for teaching Spanish to persons who speak this language but are unable to read or write it.
(4) Special arrangements may be made to buy primers in other languages.
LEI trains, equips and prepares Christians for basic literacy or ESL ministry whether they work with LEI or with another agency or church. Training is held in the U.S. and overseas. LEI will work with churches wanting to send people on long or short-term missions. LEI’s teaching and evangelism techniques seek to: (1) Minister to the poor and oppressed, (2) Strengthen established churches, (3) Plant new churches.
Each year LEI consultants travel the world doing ministry. LEI goes anywhere they are invited by established Christian organizations or churches to assist them in primer construction or training in basic literacy or ESL.
LEI is a nonprofit organization. Contributions to it are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. It is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]
Literacy & Evangelism International uses the following to express its statement of faith:
Authority:
the Bible as God’s inspired, infallible and completed Word for all people everywhere, to show them the Way the Truth and the Life and to be their final authority.
God:
one God, sovereign and unchangeable Creator and Sustainer of all, eternally existent in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, being infinite yet personal, just yet merciful, and perfect in holiness, truth & love.
People:
the essential dignity and value of all people everywhere, created as God’s image bearers, yet estranged from God because of Adam’s fall and personal sin, being totally incapable of a right relationship to God apart from grace.
Jesus Christ:
Jesus Christ, who by virtue of His deity, virgin birth, sinless humanity, substitutionary death, atoning blood, bodily resurrection and ascension to heaven as King and Priest, is the only one capable of redeeming people.
Salvation:
salvation by God’s grace alone whereby the Holy Spirit regenerates, the Son justifies, and the Father adopts those who personally repent and trust in Jesus Christ alone as Savior and Lord.
Holy Spirit:
the Holy Spirit’s deity and work of convicting, regenerating, illuminating, indwelling and manifesting His fruit and gifts in believers for the unity, edification and mission of the Church in the world, to the glory of God.
The Church:
the priesthood of all believers who together form the universal Church, Christ’s Bride or Body of which He is Head and has commissioned to advance the light of the Gospel in this dark world.
The Future:
the extension of the Gospel to all people groups, Christ’s personal, visible and bodily return, and the resurrection and judgement of all mankind the lost to eternal damnation and the saved to life with God forever.
- Literacy & Evangelism International was founded in 1967 by Dr. Robert F. Rice, a former missionary to South Korea. His experience and research prove that more than half the world's adults cannot read, so they are unable to unlock the truths of God's Word.
- In 35 years of outreach, Literacy & Evangelism International has constructed primers in 160 languages in 50 countries. Primers are nondenominational in Bible content.
- The Tulsa Literacy Center and English Language Ministry serve as models for beginning a literacy or English program in the local community, in prisons, in other states, and around the world.
- Passport to the World of English is a faith-based multi-media curriculum used in the United States and around the world to teach those who need to learn English.

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. It is not negative if there is no official statement as many don’t have anything to add than what is already on the profile. This section is not tied to transparency or to communication in general. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
