Summary

Hope Unlimited for Children ("Hope Unlimited") ministers to the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of Brazil’s street children who live in mortal risk. Using a comprehensive Christ-centered model, these children experience personal transformation while being equipped to live successful, productive lives as adult members of society. Our comprehensive model is long-term, residential, educational and community-based. We measure success by the lives of hundreds of graduates who have truly broken the cycle of violence and neglect as evidenced by their own healthy families, careers, spiritual maturity, and church and community service. We currently operate three large youth ranches near Campinas (Sao Paulo State) and Vitoria (Espirto Santo State), along with various graduate and family outreach programs, serving over 1,000 formerly homeless or at-risk youth and their families annually.

This organization is a nonprofit. Contributions to it are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. It is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

History [ Back to top ]

Hope Unlimited was founded in 1991 by Jack Smith, Philip Smith--the current president and the son of Jack Smith, and David Swoap. Jack Smith brought with him the experience of having founded a home for street children in Ethiopia that today cares for over 5,000 children at many sites. On June 25, 1998, he succumbed to liver cancer from Hepatitis contracted during his years overseas and went to be with the Lord. Until his teenage years, Philip Smith grew up in Ethiopia amidst the children of the school for orphans founded by his father. At 24, he decided he would follow his Father's footsteps and dedicate his life to serving needy children overseas. Philip is the President of Hope Unlimited and has his office at the City of Youth in Brazil. David Swoap is the former United States undersecretary of Health and Welfare, also serving as California's Secretary for Health and Human Services. During his years of public service, he dreamed about being involved in an effort to help children overseas. In 1991 he received this opportunity. David Swoap is the current chairman of the International Board of Directors. The City of Youth was established in Campinas in 1991.

Hope Unlimited can trace its history back to 1971, when the organization's founder, Jack Smith, established a similar project (Hope Enterprises) in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia. Over the course of 25 years, this project has expanded to 36 sites serving more than 5,000 youth daily. When the Ethiopian government expelled all Americans from Ethiopia, Hope Enterprises continued to thrive, entirely controlled by local efforts.

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
