Mission Statement [ Back to top ]

Hope Ministries uses the following to express its Mission Statement:

The purpose of Hope Ministries is to proclaim and demonstrate the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of men, women and children who are homeless or in need of assistance.

Program Accomplishments [ Back to top ]

  • Hope Ministries’ new Door of Faith facility on Des Moines’ south side is proving itself as a place where men can find hope and stability. The Door of Faith is a 102-bed facility that ministers to homeless men through a program of tough love, sobriety, accountability and responsibility. Each man works with a case manager to establish a plan for healing and independence. On the spiritual side, the Door provides ample opportunity for men to experience the healing power of Christ through group Bible studies and personal reflection. Since gainful employment is so important to a man’s recovery, the Door actively manages relationships between employers and residents. Employers are screened and pre-certified, and job placement is an important part of a man’s individual recovery plan. In addition, the Door periodically offers special vocational training in concert with local educational institutions. The most successful example of this approach has been the Culinary Arts Program, where men have learned how to prepare food in a commercial (restaurant) setting.
  • A renovation of Bethel Mission emergency shelter is helping Hope Ministries stretch reach out to those men who need a kind word and a safe place – and to those families who need a warm, nutritious meal. Bethel Mission has been offering hope to the hungry, homeless and hurting for more than 88 years. The simple gospel message of Jesus Christ is presented in nightly chapel services and through frequent interaction with the Mission’s ministerial and counseling staff. For men who wish to make lasting changes in their lives, the Special Transition and Evaluation Program (STEP) provides a 30-day transition period prior to moving to the Door of Faith, Hope Ministries’ recovery and rehabilitation program.
  • Plans are underway to begin a brand new ministry to the homeless: the Hope Family Center, a refuge for at-risk women and children. This facility will open in the summer of 2004. Hope Ministries will offer up to 18 months of help to the moms and kids.

Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]

Hope Ministries uses the following to express its Statement of Faith:

    • We believe that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
    • We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father and in His future return in power and glory.
    • We believe that the Holy Spirit personally indwells all believers, bearing witness to their relationship with God; and imparts spiritual enlightenment, conviction of sin, and divine power for witnessing and service.
    • We believe the Bible, as contained in the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired written Word of God. As such it is infallible and authoritative in all moral and spiritual teaching.
    • We believe in the bodily resurrection of the saved to eternal blessedness and joy, and of the lost to judgment and eternal conscious punishment.
    • Our desire is that all people will place their trust in Jesus Christ. We believe it is essential for all people to believe in Jesus as their Savior and receive Him as their Lord by the regeneration of the Holy Spirit.
    • We believe that God alone holds the power to set us free from the bondage of sin, addictions, and compulsions that destroy the quality of life that God intends for us to live.
    • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in Christ and that we should speak with a united voice for the welfare of the community.

History [ Back to top ]

      History of Hope Ministries

Hope Ministries was founded in July of 2000, the union of Bethel Mission and the Door of Faith. Behind the programs and vision of Hope Ministries are more than a century of combined service to the homeless and hungry of Central Iowa.

Over the last two years these two facilities served more than 180,000 meals to hungry men, women and children, and homeless men received more than 80,000 nights of safe shelter -- a refuge from the danger of the streets and the day-to-day struggle to survive.

Due to the growing need for long-term Christ-centered shelter and recovery for women and their children, Hope Ministries expanded its programs and services through the Hope Family Center in October 2004.

      Bethel Mission

Bethel Mission was founded in 1915, the result of a vision to help the needy and the combined prayers of several Des Moines churches. For the first 35 years, Bethel served Des Moines as an old-time "gospel mission," with preaching and Bible teaching.

But in 1949, the Mission began offering shelter to homeless men, as well as meals to the hungry -- a vision which continues today. In 1988, with the generous support of Des Moines businesses and individual supporters, Bethel moved from its aging facilities to a modern 84-bed, 24,000 square-foot building at 1310 6th Avenue in Des Moines.

      The Door of Faith

The Door of Faith was founded in 1969 by George and Jeanne Holloway. Mr. Holloway spent 37 years of his life on the streets and struggling to survive, just like many of The Door’s residents.

Late in life, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and decided to make a change. He founded the Door of Faith with the goal of rehabilitating the homeless. He wanted The Door to provide more than just a warm bed and a meal. His goal: to initiate real change by getting to the heart of the problem.

With less than $700 in the bank, the Holloways stepped out in faith and founded The Door. More than three decades later, Mr. Holloway’s tough love philosophy, based on responsibility, faith and accountability, are still very much alive at the Door of Faith.

Until December of 2002, The Door operated from a facility at 1006 Grand in downtown Des Moines. Early in 2003, Hope Ministries opened a new Door facility at 6701 SW 9th Street on Des Moines' south side. This new location reflects The Door's renewed emphasis on recovery and rehabilitation within Hope Ministries' larger program.

The Door ministers to hundreds of homeless men each year, providing a full array of rehabilitation and recovery services to men who are rebuilding their lives from the inside out.

Ministry Needs [ Back to top ]

Hope Ministries has communicated the following ways you can make a difference in the lives of the homeless and hurting:

Gifts in Kind: Your gifts of food, clothing, personal items, furniture and other items can make an immediate difference to a needy person or family.

Volunteer: Once you've worked with homeless and hurting people -- even for an afternoon -- your life will never be quite the same. We have several ways for you (or your group) to do just that.

Prayer Support: Nothing truly miraculous happens in a person's life without God's help. We need people who will pray for Hope Ministries -- because the need is so great.

Financial Support: Even the smallest gift helps us help those in need. Please consider a gift in whatever amount you feel comfortable with.

Ministry Statement or Response [ Back to top ]

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. It is not negative if there is no official statement as many don’t have anything to add than what is already on the profile. This section is not tied to transparency or to communication in general. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
