Mission Statement [ Back to top ]

Haven communicates its mission as follows:

Haven Ministries ’ mission is to communicate God ’s love in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ through word and music via Christian radio, the Internet, musical albums and the printed word.

Three components summarize Haven ’s ministry objectives:
? the Gospel/hope
? encouragement/help
? teaching/discipling.

Haven Ministries pursues these three objectives in a very personal,caring,servant-minded manner.

Program Accomplishments [ Back to top ]

"Recent accomplishments: Haven ’s recent accomplishments include the culmination of an effective speaker search, the move in 1998 from Los Angeles to Orange County, California, and the new ministry outreach of “Life Preserver” short segment CD ’s.

1.The culmination of an effective speaker search by identifying God ’s person to fill the critical role as Haven ’s speaker #4. Charles Morris joined the ministry September 1,1999.

2.The move in 1998 from outmoded, inefficient facilities in a crime-infested area of Los Angeles to a building in Orange County,California, that included a first-class, built-in studio. This was the first move for Haven in its 66 years so the potential existed for this to be a very disruptive time. The staff pulled together, with the board and administration,to accomplish a very smooth transition. (A serendipitous financial fall-out from the move was to preserve capital. The only fixed asset Haven owns is its building. In Los Angeles that asset was declining in value 2-4%per year. In Orange County property values are up at least 25%over the past two years).

3.The ministry outreach of “Life Preserver” short segment CD ’s. They are discussed at some length in other sections. The board of directors played a key role in seeing this project through to completion, along with agency partner,Ambassador Agency of Fullerton,California..

"Because the Haven program is available widely over radio and the Internet it is impossible to say how many, or who exactly is being impacted. To provide leadership with as much useful data as possible, Haven is conducting regular research. Most recently two phone interview projects have been completed and an Internet project is in process.

Here are recent results:
? 48%of respondents use Anchor regularly
? 63%were female
? 75%listened to Haven 1 to 5 years
? 70%were under age 50
? 50%worshipped in a church smaller than 300 people
? 45 different church groups were represented
? 7%didn ’t attend or were involved with non-Christian faiths

Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]

Haven subscribes to the following statement of faith:

We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
That there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
In the deity of Christ, in His vergin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension return in power and glory.
That for the salvation of lost and sinful man regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.
In the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.
In the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
In the spiritual unity of believers in Christ.

History [ Back to top ]

Founded by Paul Myers in 1934, the radio program, "The Haven of Rest," with "1st Mate Bob and the Crew of the Good Ship Grace" began it's first broadcast on radio station KMPC.

After a time on KMPC, the program was switched to KFI. The program then went on the NBC Blue Network three days a week up and down the West Coast. Soon after NBC aired the program on the Red Network one day a week across the country. Through the years of the ministry, people have come and gone on the broadcast team.

Bob Bowman continued singing Baritone until 1946 when his vision for starting Christian Radio in the Far East came to fruition in the formation and launching of the Far East Broadcasting Company. During his time with Haven, Bob became known as the "Second Mate", as he was often needed to fill in for First Mate Bob when he was ill. Lorin Whitney played the organ until 1958 when he was replaced by Dean McNichols.

The quartet continued on and in the late 1950’s, Charley Turner left for a solo ministry, being replaced by Herman Hosier. Herman did solo work for the program and sang Second Tenor in the Quartet. It was in 1968 that the nephew of Paul Myers, Val Hellikson, was asked to take on the responsibilities as President of the ministry. Val would serve in that capacity until 1988. In 1975 Glenn Shoemaker came aboard taking Ernie Payne’s place in the quartet singing Bass. Ernie had sung for 42 years and he continued on with the Executive Committee until his retirement. First Mate Bob was Founder/Speaker until his retirement in 1971.

The ministry was truly blessed when Paul Evans joined in 1968 to be speaker on the program and to serve as Vice President. Haven saw the faithfulness of the Lord again, when in 1989, Ray Ortlund became President and Speaker, having started speaking as the Friday speaker on Haven in 1983.

Since 1994 the ministry has had the services of Gene Miller, Bill Cantos and Jeff Gunn, along with Walt and Randy. Organizations that were started through Haven of Rest or had initial help and encouragement through the ministry include: The Far East Broadcast Company; World Vision; YWAM; Language Institute For Evangelism (L.I.F.E.); The Morning Chapel Hour. In 1975 Haven Ministries began publishing the daily devotional, Anchor, with the dedicated ministry of Joyce Gibson coordinating the project. The Anchor is now used by well over 25,000 people.

Ministry Needs [ Back to top ]

Ministry Statement or Response [ Back to top ]

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. It is not negative if there is no official statement as many don’t have anything to add than what is already on the profile. This section is not tied to transparency or to communication in general. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
