History [ Back to top ]

Baxter Loe, founder of Christian Relief Fund, met John Abraham, a Christian minister who had given up his government job to preach, in May 1971 during a famine in India. John Abraham asked Baxter for assistance. But Baxter thought he could not afford to help. Months later, Baxter learned that John Abraham died of starvation. This horrible tragedy and the desperate needs Baxter saw in India gave him the conviction to follow Christ’s example of feeding the hungry, preaching the gospel to the poor, and healing their diseases and heartbreak.

CRF began by helping the three surviving children of John Abraham in 1971 and was incorporated February 15, 1974. By 1986 there were over 600 children in 12 Children’s Homes in India, and CRF’s extended to Malawi, Honduras, and Dominican Republic. By 1993 CRF programs were in Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, Romania, Guatemala, Albania, Kenya, Nairobi, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Ethiopia, Nigeria.

CRF assisted the U.S. victims of Midwest floods. In 1994, CRF aided Bosnian and Rwandan refugees and victims of the California earthquake. In 1995 CRF sent aid to Haiti, the victims of the earthquake in Kobe, Japan, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the war in Sierra Leone. Victims of war in Liberia and hurricanes Bertha and Fran in eastern United States were helped in 1996.

In 1997, CRF supported Child Sponsorship in Liberia, relief for refugees in Burundi, and victims of natural disasters in California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, North Dakota, Arkansas, and Texas. In 1998, CRF initiated child sponsorship programs in VietNam, Nicaragua and Uganda and provided relief for the victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. In 1999, CRF provided relief for Kosovo refugees in Albania and initiated New Child sponsorship programs in Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba.

Ministry Statement or Response [ Back to top ]

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. It is not negative if there is no official statement as many don’t have anything to add than what is already on the profile. This section is not tied to transparency or to communication in general. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
