Summary

Back to the Bible's legal name is Good News Broadcasting Association, Inc. Back to the Bible ("BTTB") is a worldwide organization committed to teaching God's Word to all people of every nation. BTTB does this in three ways: (1) Beginning with the establishment of indigenous BTTB ministries. This has led to offices in 13 countries, operated by nationals, ministering in and through their own culture. Since the offices were founded, they have been staffed almost totally by individuals from within the culture, becoming 100% indigenous three years ago. (2) Teaching God's Word through international media. Today, listeners can hear BTTB-produced and -sponsored broadcasts in 17 languages. (3) Missions projects. Outreach to the people of their own country and culture is a hallmark of all BTTB offices. Most projects involve assistance from one of their offices, where the projects are administered on a local level. Theodore Epp founded BTTB in 1939.

This organization is a nonprofit. Contributions to it are fully deductible to the extent allowed by law. It is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

Purpose [ Back to top ]

Back to the Bible ("BTTB") is a worldwide service ministry that seeks to lead people into a dynamic relationship with God.

Back to the Bible?s purpose is to lead believers into spiritual maturity and active service for Christ in the local church and the world and to reach unbelievers with the Gospel of Christ by teaching the Bible through media.

That purpose is accomplished by:

  1. Teaching what the Bible says, what it means, and how it applies to life;
  2. Reaching beyond ourselves to impact the world with the Bible;
  3. Providing quality, Bible-based resources and services;
  4. Involving people personally and financially in God?s work; and
  5. Honoring God through excellence and integrity in lifestyle and ministry operations.

Back to the Bible was founded in 1939 by Theodore Epp. The ministry consisted of a single radio broadcast on a 250-watt station out of Lincoln, Nebraska. Back to the Bible, still located in Lincoln, is now a multi-media ministry that uses radio, television, video, literature and the Internet (www.backtothebible.org) to spread God?s life-changing message of love and forgiveness to people throughout the world. Back to the Bible regularly uses 49 Bible teachers worldwide, and sponsors programs in 25 languages spoken by 50% of the world?s population.

Back to the Bible's legal name is Good News Broadcasting Association, Inc. and it is a nonprofit.

Contributions to it are fully deductible to the extent allowed by law. It is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

Statement of Faith [ Back to top ]

BTTB uses the following to communicate its beliefs:

    The Bible:

We believe that the Bible, consisting of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, is the revelation of God to mankind, is verbally and fully inspired by Him, is sufficient for the knowledge of God and His will that is necessary for the eternal welfare of mankind, is infallible and inerrant in its original manuscripts, and is the supreme and final authority for all Christian faith and conduct.

    God:

We believe that there is but one God, whose essential nature is that of a living, personal Spirit. He is infinitely perfect in all of His attributes, He is the creator and sustainer of all things, and He exists in three persons?Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

    Jesus Christ:

We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man; that is, He is fully divine and also fully human. He preexisted eternally with the Father, was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, lived a perfect life and died a substitutionary death for the sins of mankind. We believe that He arose bodily from the grave, that He ascended to heaven, where He is presently High Priest and Advocate for His people, and that He will return personally and bodily to the earth at the close of this age. He is the world?s only Savior and is the Lord of all.

    The Holy Spirit:

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, the third Person of the Trinity. We believe that He was sent from the Father by the Son to convict the world, to regenerate and indwell those who trust in Christ, to baptize them into the Body of Christ, to seal them for the final day of redemption, to guide them into truth, to fill them for a life of holiness and victory and to empower them for witness and service. We believe that He gives spiritual gifts to believers for the proper functioning of the Body of Christ, which is the Church.

    Man:

We believe that man was originally created by a definite act of God in His own image and is dependent upon and accountable to his Creator. Through disobedience, the first man sinned and fell from his original state of moral perfection. As a consequence, he brought upon himself and upon the whole human race the penalty for sin, which is spiritual and physical death. Since Adam, every person is born with an inherently sinful nature and becomes a sinner in thought, word and deed. Every person, therefore, stands under the just condemnation of God and is unable to save himself or to present deeds worthy of merit before God.

    Salvation:

We believe that a person is saved by God?s grace alone, made possible through the shed blood of Christ, whereby He died a substitutionary death for mankind, and through the Resurrection of Christ. Salvation becomes effective when a person, by an act of faith, acknowledges Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord. The benefits of this salvation include the forgiveness of sins and a new standing before God, the impartation of new life and all the privileges that accompany a new family relationship with God. The assurance of salvation as a present possession is the privilege of every believer in Christ.

    The Christian Life:

We believe that God expects every believer to live a life of obedience, in which every area of his life is brought under the lordship of Jesus Christ and the fruit of the Spirit becomes increasingly evident in his life. The goal of the Christian life is to be conformed to the image of Christ. This life is characterized supremely by self-giving love for God and for others. The life and character of Christ, which grows through the Holy Spirit, is noticeably distinct from the life of the world. A believer who resists the gracious working of the Holy Spirit and fails to grow in obedience is chastened in infinite love by his Heavenly Father so he may learn obedience.

    The Church:

We believe that the Church of Jesus Christ is the universal company of God?s redeemed people, His Body, of which He is the head, His Bride, whom He loves infinitely, and His temple, in which He dwells. This universal Body of Christ is visibly expressed in local assemblies, whose purpose is to glorify God through worship, fellowship, instruction in God?s Word, observing the ordinances and training in service to the world. The supreme task in the mission of the Church is to make disciples for Christ in all the nations through the proclamation and teaching of the Gospel. The Church is also to demonstrate the love and compassion of Christ, through word and deed, in an alienated world.

    The Future Life:

We believe in the imminent, premillennial return of Christ to take His people to be with Him and to judge and rule the earth in righteousness. We believe in the resurrection of the body for both believers and unbelievers. We believe that the believer goes to be with Christ in conscious blessedness immediately after death, having escaped the condemnation of his sins through the death of Christ. He will, however, stand before God to receive rewards for works approved by God or to suffer loss for works disapproved. The believer will live eternally in the immediate presence of God, while the unbeliever must face the eternal and holy Judge, who will sentence him for his sins. He will experience the punishment of eternal separation in hell from the presence of God.

    Satan:

We believe in the personality and depraved character of Satan, who is the great enemy of God and man. We believe that he, along with the company of demonic beings serving him, works out his evil plans through the ungodly world system, limited only by the sovereign rule of God. We believe that he was judged by Christ at the cross and will ultimately meet his doom in the lake of fire, where he will remain eternally.

History [ Back to top ]

Back to the Bible describes its history as follows:

On May 1, 1939, Theodore Epp brought Back to the Bible to the airwaves. His vision was to proclaim the message of Christianity through a radio broadcast. His Partner was God.

More than 55 years later, there have been a lot of changes in Back to the Bible, but the basic message of God's love is still the same.

When Theodore Epp started the broadcast, his goal was to make Jesus Christ known to the world. He started by supporting missionaries, adding U.S. radio stations and broadcasting via shortwave radio to other countries.

In 1954 Back to the Bible's first international office opened in Canada. It was followed over the next five years by offices in England, Sri Lanka, France, the Philippines, Australia, South Africa, India, Ecuador and Jamaica.

By the early '70s, offices had been added in Italy, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia as well as a second office in India. Back to the Bible could be heard on more than 700 stations worldwide and was broadcasting in eight languages.

In 1980 Warren Wiersbe became the Assistant Bible Teacher and eventually took over as General Director in 1984. In 1985, Back to the Bible founder Theodore Epp died.

1988 brought the launching of a new women's ministry, Gateway To Joy with Elisabeth Elliot. And in 1990, Woodrow Kroll joined Back to the Bible as the new General Director and Bible Teacher, replacing Warren Wiersbe who retired.

In February of 1995, Back to the Bible moved to a new international headquarters building in Lincoln, Nebraska. The past five years had seen much growth and change including the addition of new foreign language programs and opening new offices in Poland, China and Russia. During the '90's we have also expanded into new media opportunities such as video, CD-ROM and now the Internet.

  • An outstanding model of ministry support services
  • Offers Christians an opportunity to be involved in diverse missionary efforts in foreign countries

  • ?Same noticeably rapid slide from separatist-fundamental to neo-evangelical.?
  • Nowhere near the theological vigilance of Theodore Epp?s day.
  • Trying too hard to please everyone; too much ministry gimmickry.
  • Too much admixture of secular psychology with Biblical truth.

  • BTTB views God?s influence in creation as redemptive
  • BTTB?s view of God?s relationship to creation, and the authoritative statements of Scripture are viewed as strong imperative for evangelistic witness
  • BTTB?s view of Scripture compels individual and corporate social responsibility, accountability for kindness and compassion in personal dealings

MinistryWatch.com?s Take
November 2003
By Dan Wray, Research Fellow

Back to Basics
?Back to the Bible,? according to the ministry website, ?is a world wide service ministry seeking to lead people into a dynamic relationship with God,? through teaching the Word of God, reaching beyond social, cultural and ethnic boundaries, providing substantive and reliable discipleship tools, involving people in total commitment to the Lord and his work, and by honoring Him in every area of life. Founded in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1939 as a Christian radio ministry, today BTTB spans the globe with radio, television, literature, video and internet programming, reaching over 56% of the world?s population in more than 22 languages with an impressive array of downloadable Bible studies, daily devotionals, discipleship curriculum, Christian lifestyle advisories and stewardship material. Though radio continues to be the principal distribution method ? the ministry currently produces 38 unique radio programs worldwide ? BTTB is making better and better use of print, television, audio, video and the Internet, with web sites on every continent.

Bible based, ?up to date?
Originally cast in the conservative ?fundamentalist? mold ? championing such issues as the authority of Scripture, the deity of Christ, substitutionary atonement, a separatist lifestyle in expectancy of the second advent of Christ, and the certainty of future judgment and reward ? BTTB has retained its reputation for a soundly Biblical doctrinal stance while adjusting in recent years to more contemporized ministry style and program distribution methods, including daily devotionals for download to personal Palm pilots. Such notables as ministry founder Theodore Epp, Harold Berry, G. Christian Weiss, Moody Memorial pastors and Bible teachers Warren Wiersbe and Erwin Lutzer, Bruce Wilkinson, Elizabeth Elliot, C. S. Lewis, Miles Stanford, Charles Ryrie, Gene Getz, current ministry President Woodrow Kroll and numerous others have continued to provide BTTB lay supporters with a wealth of Bible training and encouragement. In addition to print, audio and video resources, BTTB offers Bible Study curricula at the beginner and intermediate levels available for download from the Internet. For serious students of Scripture, BTTB has collaborated with Wordsearch Bible software to offer the Bible Discovery Center, an extensive Bible Study software suite incorporating numerous reference tools with interactive user interface.

From studio to satellite
While BTTB?s typical radio broadcast format has consisted of daily 30-minute segments on commercially owned radio, recent ventures into direct broadcast satellite (DBS) TV and radio over Christian owned and operated Skyangel TV, and digital cable?s 24 hour i-Lifetv have enhanced BTTB?s broadcast scope and program options. Internationally, in addition to program production for commercially owned local stations, BTTB owns Italy?s Radio Riposta, providing a platform for the broad social impact of extensive gospel influence throughout Italy because of an expanded program schedule. BTTB also promotes the ministries of its numerous program and literary contributors such as Elizabeth Elliot?s ?Gateway to Joy,? and ?Revive our Hearts,? with Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

From Nebraska ??to the regions beyond?
BTTB has been evangelistic in scope since its inception and facilitates donor support for international missions projects of the month such as summer youth camps in Poland, house churches in India, family life conferences in Japan, seminary scholarship assistance in Jordan and the Middle East, and native language gospel broadcasts to communities internationally displaced due to economic hardship in their own homelands. Throughout, BTTB has kept pace by providing theologically conservative evangelical programming in co-operation with existing ministries while avoiding formal denominational affiliation.

Sovereign Provider of every resource
BTTB?s stewardship philosophy is illustrated in the scope of its study curriculum on Biblical giving, emphasizing stewardship responsibility to God as the provider of every resource in life, and steering a wide berth around high visibility financial recruitment efforts and all traces of material prosperity as a motive for Christian giving. As with most ministries without specific church sponsorship BTTB depends upon charitable contributions from radio listeners and supporters, reporting ministry financial needs matter-of-factly and limiting financial appeals to occasional broadcast spots. Financial donations are facilitated through the ministry website, as well as revenue from sales of literary publications, music and videos. BTTB does advertise ministry resources such as the Bible Discovery Center computer software through such Christian weblogs as those featured on Crosswalk and other Christian websites. Many view BTTB?s use of Direct Broadcast Satellite as the least expensive quality method of distributing a high powered broadcast signal. BTTB stresses stewardship accountability in giving and offers estate and financial trust counseling through the ministry website.

Bits and Pieces
Back to the Bible?s founder, Theodore Epp approached a local radio station manager in Lincoln, Nebraska with an offer to provide ?something for the heart,? the one program component missing from the station?s broadcast schedule. When asked how the proposal would be financed, Epp is reported to have confidently answered that the same Partner who had underwritten Epp?s ministry costs for twelve years would handle the broadcast expenses. The Partner? ?God is our Partner,? Epp replied. The story of the ministry?s early days is chronicled in the Back to the Bible publication entitled, ?45 Years of Adventuring by Faith.? Comfortably positioned in the historical tradition of such schools as Moody Bible Institute and Philadelphia College of the Bible, BTTB has been a bastion of theological conservatism, aligning early with such broadcast ministries as Radio Bible Class and characterized by a distinctly premillennial interpretation of Scripture and adherence to the clarion of a separatist lifestyle and vigilance against ecumenical compromise. Over the years, BTTB became a veritable repository of Christian writers, teachers and commentators, offering the outstanding literary works of established Bible teachers in much the same way as Moody Bible Institute?s colportage library, though on perhaps a smaller scale (Historically, the colporteur was a peddler of Bibles, religious books and tracts). BTTB continues to offer such perennial favorites as Miles Stanford?s The Green Letters and numerous selections by Elizabeth Elliot, as well as publications by Tony Evans, Charles Ryrie and others.

Passing the mantle
In the late ?70?s, with the exigencies of retirement approaching, Theodore Epp approached Warren Wiersbe, conference speaker and former Pastor of Moody Memorial Church about joining the BTTB staff as a part time ministry contributor and Bible teacher. A respected Bible scholar and prolific author of Biblical commentary with a distinctly pastoral writing style, Wiersbe?s towering literary contributions include his readable ?Be? commentaries on individual books of Scripture, and his immensely popular homiletical outlines. Wiersbe eventually accepted Epp?s invitation and when Epp retired as General Director in 1984, Wiersbe succeeded him, serving until 1990.

Though Back to the Bible?s support has remained strong, Warren Wiersbe and current General Director Woodrow Kroll have drawn criticism in recent years for more contemporary ministry approach, and alleged departure from certain doctrinal distinctives held by Wiersbe?s predecessor, in particular Theodore Epp?s long held position on ?the believer?s two natures,? as taught in Miles Stanford?s Green Letters, reprinted and distributed by BTTB under the title The Principles of Spiritual Growth. Before his death in 1999, Stanford himself called upon BTTB to ?repudiate eradication? ? the view that the sin principle of Romans 6 and 7 is eradicated upon conversion ? ?and to stand firm for the truth of the rightly-divided Word concerning the believer?s two natures.? Additional lesser criticisms from arch conservatives for BTTB?s acceptance of modern language translations of Scripture notwithstanding, Back to the Bible retains its reputation for adherence to the theological distinctives and ministry to the heart which comprised the early vision of its founder.

Ministry Statement or Response [ Back to top ]

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. It is not negative if there is no official statement as many don’t have anything to add than what is already on the profile. This section is not tied to transparency or to communication in general. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
