Purpose [ Back to top ]

The American Bible Society ("ABS") is a nondenominational bible society whose purpose is to provide the Holy Scriptures to every man, woman and child in a language and form that each can readily understand, and at a price each can easily afford. ABS carries out its mission through programs that address Scripture needs in the United States and around the world. ABS serves a number of Christian churches, denominations, and agencies in part by providing translations and publications that do not contain doctrinal notes or comments. ABS leaves teaching and explaining the Scriptures to its partner groups. ABS is one of more than 135 national organizations that have joined in the global fellowship of the United Bible Societies. It works with them in hundreds of translation, literacy, Scriptures distribution, and other projects. ABS has helped to provide hundreds of millions of Bibles and Portions of the Scriptures world-wide since its founding in 1816.

In addition to the multi-media translations and the expanding content of the ABS site on the World Wide Web (a site that includes a multi-translation Daily Bible Reading Guide, a growing amount of material from its archives and library, and interactive pages for kids), ABS continues to support translation projects around the world. The ABS Good News for New Readers series of Scripture texts helps the functionally illiterate improve their reading skills. ABS also is working in partnership with local institutions and churches in urban areas to strengthen families, improve health care, and deal with problems ranging from AIDS to homeless, poverty, and violence.

This organization is a nonprofit. Contributions to it are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

History [ Back to top ]

The American Bible Society was founded in 1816 by a group of national leaders - clergy, politicians, businessmen, and educators - who sought to motivate people to commit to providing and sharing the Holy Scriptures with everyone and who wanted to make the Bible available, affordable, and understandable. The American Bible Society was conceived as a provider of the Word - as a resource of Scripture for all of God's Children.

Ministry Needs [ Back to top ]

American Bible Society uses the following to express its ministry needs:

Through your prayerful and generous support, you can be a part of our continuing mission to bring God's message of hope and love to a hurting world on your behalf. You can have an amazing impact on the world. You can help change a person's life not only today or tomorrow, but for eternity. Sharing the good news of our Savior's birth, life, death and resurrection brings God's message of love and hope to millions of people every day. Your gifts to ABS make this possible. It's hard to believe that for just $4 you can change a person's life. Something so small can do so much.

You can support the Bible cause through a number of American Bible Society programs designed to impact people's lives around the corner and around the globe. For information see the ministry's website.

  • Ministry Statement or Response [ Back to top ]

This organization has not offered MinistryWatch.com with an official statement or response for their profile. This area is meant as a mechanism for the profiled ministry to communicate anything they may choose. It is open ended as to the topic, issues, facts or news to address. It is not negative if there is no official statement as many don’t have anything to add than what is already on the profile. This section is not tied to transparency or to communication in general. Many very open and talkative ministries with us choose not to post an official statement. This section is just an open ended offering to the profiled ministry for anything extra to say as they may choose.
